Calgary's water main replacement project remains on schedule, according to city officials, who also announced the formation of a new department and an oversight board to enhance infrastructure management.
Project Progress
The repair work, prompted by a catastrophic feeder-main break in summer 2024 and a subsequent water main rupture in northwest Calgary on Dec. 30, 2025, is progressing as planned. The December incident occurred just blocks from the earlier break, sending water billowing up from under the road.
New Department and Oversight
To prevent future failures, the city is establishing a dedicated department focused on water infrastructure and an independent oversight board. These entities will oversee maintenance, inspection, and long-term planning for Calgary's water system.
City officials emphasize that the new measures aim to improve accountability and ensure the reliability of the water supply. The department will coordinate with existing agencies to streamline repairs and upgrades, while the oversight board will provide transparent reporting to the public.
Residents have expressed concerns about recurring breaks, but the city assures that the new structure will address systemic issues. The project is expected to be completed within the current timeline, with minimal disruption to daily life.
