A new supportive recovery house tailored specifically to individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) has opened in Edmonton. Named Den of Willows, the facility aims to provide a safe and structured environment for those struggling with addiction and FASD.
Specialized Care for FASD
The Den of Willows is designed to address the unique needs of people with FASD, who often face challenges in traditional recovery programs. The facility offers individualized support, including counseling, life skills training, and medical care, all within a trauma-informed framework.
Community Response
Local advocates and health professionals have praised the initiative, noting that specialized housing for FASD is long overdue. The house can accommodate up to 12 residents at a time, with plans to expand based on demand.
“This is a game-changer for our community,” said a spokesperson for the Edmonton FASD Network. “People with FASD need tailored support to succeed in recovery, and Den of Willows provides exactly that.”
A Model for the Future
The opening of Den of Willows is seen as a potential model for other cities across Canada. With FASD affecting an estimated 4% of the population, the need for specialized services is growing. The facility is funded through a combination of government grants and private donations.
Residents will have access to 24/7 staff support, group therapy, and recreational activities. The goal is to help individuals build independence and reduce the risk of relapse.
