Anti-Trans Legislation's Unintended Consequences Harm All Children
The persistent efforts by conservative lawmakers to restrict gender-affirming health care for transgender youth continue to be alarming. Now, over a year into President Donald Trump's second term, with numerous anti-trans laws enacted, the real-world impact is becoming clear. These policies are not only harming queer children but are also negatively affecting all minors, as they limit access to essential medical treatments.
Texas Senate Bill 14 and Its Far-Reaching Effects
In 2023, Texas implemented Senate Bill 14, a mandate that makes it illegal for doctors to provide gender-affirming medical care to individuals under 18 years old. This law specifically prohibits physicians from prescribing hormone therapy to minors seeking gender-affirming treatment. The consequences have been extensive, with doctors growing increasingly worried about legal repercussions, including the potential revocation of their licenses for violations. As a result, many have reduced or halted all services involving hormones, even when such treatments are unrelated to a patient's gender identity.
Irony in Medical Necessity for Cis Children
Ironically, the same hormone therapies and puberty blockers that conservative lawmakers have targeted are crucial for treating various medical conditions in cisgender children. According to reports from the Texas Tribune, these treatments are used for conditions such as endometriosis, growth hormone deficiencies, and certain genetic disorders. In El Paso, the city's sole registered pediatric endocrinologist, Hector Granados, stopped offering puberty blockers to all his patients after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accused him of providing trans health care to minors. Although the lawsuit was eventually dropped, the damage persisted, leaving no one in the city able to receive this care temporarily.
This included a 7-year-old girl with Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a rare genetic disorder for which puberty blockers are a standard part of treatment. Without access to this medication, her family was forced to relocate from El Paso to New Mexico to ensure she could continue receiving the necessary care.
A Bleak Warning on Health Care Restrictions
This situation serves as a stark warning about the dangers of lawmakers restricting access to health care. On the surface, these laws are framed as targeting a specific group, but in practice, the health care infrastructure does not operate in isolation. Doctors and medical services cannot easily separate care based on identity, meaning that when health care is denied to some, it is effectively denied to everyone.
This is not to suggest that cis children's lives are more valuable; rather, it highlights the broad ignorance and cruelty embedded in anti-trans bills. It underscores how interconnected our well-being truly is, a lesson that many seemed to forget following the pandemic.
Ultimately, pushing for policies that deprive all children of potentially crucial treatments requires a dedicated and relentless transphobic mindset. While some may naively believe that such policies only affect one group, the reality is that systems do not work that way. This serves as a powerful reminder of our shared vulnerability and the need for inclusive health care policies.
