A residential fire on Armstrong Street in Ottawa's Kitchissippi ward sent two men to hospital Sunday evening, with one reported to be in critical condition.
Emergency Response to Flames and Smoke
Ottawa Fire Services began receiving multiple 911 calls around 6 p.m. on January 18 regarding a fire in the 60 block of Armstrong Street. Callers reported visible flames coming from a window of a multi-unit residential low-rise building.
Upon arrival, crews confirmed active flames and smoke. The situation prompted the dispatch of additional firefighting resources to the scene. A rescue operation was successfully conducted by 6:10 p.m., according to an official news release.
Victims Transported to Hospital
The fire was declared under control by 6:26 p.m. An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson provided details on the injured. The man in critical condition was transported to a hospital at approximately 6:30 p.m.
A second man was taken to hospital about an hour later, arriving in stable condition. Officials have not released details regarding the nature of the injuries sustained by either individual.
Aftermath and Investigation
Following containment, firefighters used high-pressure fans to clear residual smoke from the building to ensure safety for residents and investigators.
Support services were mobilized quickly. Victim Services personnel were dispatched to the scene to assist those affected. An OC Transpo bus was also brought to the location to provide temporary shelter for displaced residents during the emergency response.
The cause of the Armstrong Street fire is now under investigation. An Ottawa Fire Services investigator attended the scene to determine the origin and circumstances that led to the blaze.
