The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) has issued an urgent appeal to animal lovers across Calgary and beyond. The organization is currently caring for 35 hamsters that desperately need forever homes, with seven of these small pets facing the additional challenge of being born without eyes.
Unexpected Influx Strains Resources
According to information released on November 18, 2025, AARCS finds itself overwhelmed after receiving what they describe as an "influx" of hamsters. The rescue organization, known for its work with animals in distress, is now scrambling to find suitable accommodations for all 35 rodents while simultaneously asking the public for financial support through donations.
The situation presents unique challenges for the rescue crew. Seven of the hamsters were born without eyes, requiring specialized care and understanding adopters who can provide appropriate living environments for visually impaired pets.
Special Needs Require Special Homes
While all the hamsters need permanent homes, the eyeless animals demand particular attention. Rescue staff emphasize that blind hamsters can live full, happy lives with proper care and accommodations. These might include maintaining consistent cage layouts, using auditory cues for interaction, and ensuring safety measures are in place to prevent injuries.
"Hamsters without eyes adapt remarkably well to their environments," explained a representative from the organization. "They rely heavily on their other senses, particularly smell and hearing, to navigate their world. With the right family, they can thrive just like any other pet."
Community Response Needed
The sudden arrival of so many hamsters has stretched AARCS's resources thin. The organization is now calling on the community for two forms of support: potential adopters who can provide loving homes, and financial donations to help cover the costs of care, including food, bedding, and veterinary expenses.
Prospective adopters undergo a screening process to ensure each hamster is placed in a suitable environment. The rescue provides guidance on proper hamster care, including appropriate cage sizes, dietary needs, and enrichment activities.
For those unable to adopt but wishing to help, monetary donations directly support the ongoing care of these and other animals in AARCS's protection. The organization relies entirely on community support to continue its lifesaving work.
