American Tourist Missing in Bahamas Following Dinghy Incident
Police in the Bahamas have launched a search operation for an American woman who went missing in the waters near the islands on Saturday night. The incident occurred during an evening excursion with her husband, sparking a multi-agency response.
Details of the Disappearance
According to reports from NBC News, the unidentified woman was swept out to sea by strong currents after falling from a dinghy. The couple was traveling from Hope Town to Elbow Cay when the accident happened around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that the woman's husband reported she had the keys to the vessel when she fell overboard. Authorities revealed that when his wife entered the water, the engine of the eight-foot, hard-bottom dinghy shut off immediately.
Husband's Harrowing Ordeal
Police officials detailed that the husband lost sight of his wife after she fell overboard and was forced to paddle the vessel for hours before reaching shore. "He lost sight of her," police confirmed in their statement. "He then paddled the vessel to shore."
The husband eventually reached Marsh Harbour Boat Yard at approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday, where he was able to alert someone about the incident. That person then contacted the authorities, initiating the official search operation.
Search Efforts Underway
Following the report, police officers joined forces with members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Hope Town fire officials to search the surrounding area. CBS News reported that the multi-agency team is combing the waters and coastline for any sign of the missing woman.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and have asked community members with any information to come forward. Tips can be reported directly to the police or submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
Travel Advisory Context
This incident comes after the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory in April warning American tourists about potentially dangerous boating conditions in the Bahamas. The advisory noted that "boating is not well regulated" on the islands and that "injuries and deaths have occurred" in similar circumstances.
The search for the missing American woman continues as authorities work to determine exactly what happened during the couple's evening excursion between the Bahamian islands.
