Baby Jessica, Rescued from Well 40 Years Ago, Arrested for Domestic Assault
Jessica McClure Morales, the woman famously known as Baby Jessica after her dramatic rescue from a Texas well nearly four decades ago, has been arrested on domestic assault charges. The 40-year-old was taken into custody following an alleged disturbance at her Midland County, Texas, home, where she lives with her husband, Daniel Morales, and their two children.
Arrest and Charges
McClure Morales was arrested on Saturday and charged with assault causing bodily harm involving family violence. She was later released from the Midland County Detention Center after posting bond. The arrest comes close to 40 years after she made worldwide headlines as a toddler trapped in an abandoned well for almost 60 hours.
Authorities have not released further details about the alleged domestic assault incident. However, days after her arrest, McClure Morales reportedly posted a cryptic message on social media, stating, "Note to self: Happiness is letting go of what you assume your life is supposed to be like right now, and sincerely appreciating it for everything that it is."
The Historic Rescue Operation
On October 14, 1987, McClure Morales, then 18 months old, fell 22 feet down an abandoned well in her aunt's backyard in Midland, Texas. The rescue effort, which was broadcast globally, took nearly 60 hours and involved emergency personnel using a drill to bore a tunnel through adjacent rocks to free her.
During the operation, rescuers reportedly heard the girl singing about Winnie the Pooh. She suffered injuries that required more than a dozen surgeries and lost a toe to gangrene. McClure Morales has long maintained she has no memory of the terrifying ordeal.
Life After the Rescue
In the years following the rescue, McClure Morales lived a relatively quiet life in Texas. She met her husband, Danny, through her sister in 2005 and married the following year, telling People magazine in a 2017 interview that she "instantly fell in love" with him. She also reflected on her rescue, stating, "My life is a miracle. I don't believe that any of it would've happened without God."
The incident inspired a 1989 television movie, "Everybody's Baby: The Rescue of Jessica McClure." Despite the fame, McClure Morales has often spoken about the challenges of being known as Baby Jessica, including being picked on, but she emphasized that most people view her story as an amazing miracle.
