Brisbane 2032 Rowing Venue Remains Firmly at Fitzroy River Despite Ongoing Concerns

In a definitive statement, Brisbane 2032 Olympic organizers have reaffirmed their commitment to hosting the rowing events at the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, central Queensland, dismissing any consideration of alternative venues. This decision comes despite persistent worries about the river's challenging conditions, including strong tides and the presence of crocodiles.

Venue Challenges and Athlete Apprehensions

The Rockhampton waterway, located approximately 600 kilometers north of Brisbane, has been a natural habitat for crocodiles and is known for its powerful currents. When initially proposed as an Olympic venue a year ago, it received a mixed reception, primarily due to these environmental factors. Former Olympic rowing champion Drew Ginn has voiced concerns that certain athletes might be disadvantaged based on their lane placements on the river, highlighting potential fairness issues in competition.

Adding to the debate, a council in northern Brisbane has suggested an alternative venue in Moreton Bay, but Queensland state Olympic minister Tim Mander has firmly rejected this idea. In a press conference in Brisbane, Mander stated, "We are committed to it, we're not looking at alternatives. The rowing will be at Rockhampton. There's no reason to be looking at alternatives when you have the level of confidence that we have."

Growing Pressure and Upcoming Assessments

The controversy has escalated with approximately 500 rowers signing an open letter last month, urging a reconsideration of the Fitzroy River proposal. Despite this, the river passed initial testing by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority in October of last year, providing some validation for its selection.

An expert from World Rowing, the international rowing federation, is scheduled to assess the venue in the coming weeks. This evaluation is expected to determine whether to endorse the Fitzroy River for the Games by mid-year. World Rowing previously acknowledged potential issues in a statement last year but emphasized its commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure athlete safety and the integrity of the competition.

Minister Mander downplayed the significance of the upcoming assessment, noting, "There's nothing unusual about World Rowing's coming assessment. There's not one thing that they've said that would give us concern with regard to going forward." This stance underscores the organizers' confidence in the venue's suitability, even as scrutiny intensifies.

As preparations for Brisbane 2032 continue, the focus remains on balancing logistical feasibility with athlete welfare, setting the stage for further discussions in the months ahead.
