A new $100 million cold storage facility has opened at Port Saint John, marking a significant investment in the region's infrastructure. The facility, built by Americold, is described as the first of its kind in the area and is expected to enhance the port's capacity for handling perishable goods.
Facility Details and Capacity
The facility spans over 150,000 square feet and provides 30,000 pallet positions for frozen and refrigerated products. It is designed to support the growing demand for cold storage in Atlantic Canada, particularly for seafood, meat, and agricultural exports.
Economic Impact
The project created approximately 200 construction jobs and is expected to generate 50 permanent positions once fully operational. Officials say the facility will strengthen trade links between New Brunswick and international markets, including Europe and Asia.
“This is a game-changer for our port and our province,” said a spokesperson for Port Saint John. “It opens up new opportunities for exporters and positions Saint John as a key hub for cold chain logistics.”
Strategic Importance
The facility is located adjacent to the port's container terminal, allowing for efficient transfer of goods from ship to storage. Americold, the world's largest publicly traded real estate investment trust focused on temperature-controlled warehousing, operates over 240 facilities globally.
The investment aligns with broader efforts to modernize Port Saint John, which has seen increased container traffic in recent years. The port handled over 100,000 TEUs in 2025, a 15% increase from the previous year.
