On June 17, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the Almaguin Highlands OPP detachment conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Highway 11 near Burk's Falls. During the stop, police observed evidence of drug trafficking and subsequently searched the vehicle.
The search led to the seizure of a quantity of cocaine and fentanyl, as well as Canadian currency believed to be proceeds of crime. The total value of the drugs seized is estimated at over $10,000.
Two men, both from the Greater Toronto Area, were arrested at the scene. They have been identified as 28-year-old Ahmed Hassan and 31-year-old Michael Tran. Both face multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
Hassan and Tran have been held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge. The investigation is ongoing, and police anticipate further charges.
OPP officials emphasize that drug trafficking remains a serious concern in the region, and they are committed to disrupting illegal drug networks. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity to local police or Crime Stoppers.
