A 24-year-old driver from the Windsor-Leamington area has been charged with stunt driving after Ontario Provincial Police clocked their vehicle traveling at 144 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The incident occurred on Highway 401 near Chatham-Kent on Wednesday afternoon.
Details of the Incident
According to OPP, the driver was observed by a patrol officer operating a 2023 Honda Civic at 144 km/h, exceeding the speed limit by 64 km/h. The vehicle was immediately stopped, and the driver was issued a stunt driving charge under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act.
As a result, the driver faces an immediate 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. If convicted, penalties include fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, up to six months in jail, and a two-year licence suspension for a first offense.
Police Warning
OPP Constable Aaron Miller emphasized the dangers of excessive speeding. 'Driving at such high speeds significantly reduces reaction time and increases the severity of collisions. This type of behavior endangers not only the driver but everyone on the road,' he said.
The OPP continue to conduct targeted enforcement to combat stunt driving and aggressive driving, particularly on major highways. They urge motorists to obey speed limits and drive responsibly.
