The Banff World Media Festival, often called the 'Davos of Media,' is set to host prominent industry figures from Hollywood and beyond. Executive director Jenn Kuzmyk asserts that nearly every notable Canadian series has roots in this event.
A Legacy of Deal-Making
While tracking all projects born from festival meetings is challenging, Kuzmyk notes that shows like Private Eyes and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy were launched through connections made in Banff. The festival, now in its 47th year, will welcome approximately 1,500 attendees at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel starting Sunday.
Intimacy Over Scale
Kuzmyk emphasizes the value of the festival's intimate atmosphere: 'Banff is not meant to be the biggest, it's meant to be the best.' This year's delegate list includes executives from Warner Bros., TikTok, CBC, Netflix, Corus Entertainment, Lionsgate, Disney+ Canada, Fox Entertainment, YouTube, HBO, Amazon MGM Studios, Bell Media, A+E Global Media, Paramount Entertainment Canada, Roku, and AMC Networks.
Keynote Speakers and Awards
Emmy-winning actor Henry Winkler will be interviewed by A&E's Sharon Scott on Monday. The Rockie Awards Gala on Tuesday will honor Jason Priestley with the Canadian Award of Distinction, Tantoo Cardinal with the Career Achievement Award, Ken Jeong with the Sir Peter Ustinov Award, and Mae Martin with the Creative Voice Award. Succession showrunner Jesse Armstrong will deliver a keynote on Tuesday morning.
Canadian Talent Spotlight
A Sunday panel titled 'Main Character Energy: Canadian Actors MADE for the Global Stage' will feature Kim Coates, Jack Innanen, Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova, Anna Lambe, Jason Priestley, and Supinder Wraich.
The festival continues to serve as a crucial hub for networking and project development, with Kuzmyk noting that many deals are struck informally over coffee or in meeting rooms.
