In a recent conversation, Katie Fitzmaurice of Invest Vancouver highlighted the region's rapid growth as a technology hub. "Vancouver is one of the fastest growing tech hubs," she said. "We have the talent, we have a world class tech sector, and we have a quality of life that attracts global talent."
Fitzmaurice pointed to a significant announcement at the second annual Web Summit, where U.S.-based Nutanix revealed it was expanding significantly into Vancouver. "Vancouver is where we are building our centre of excellence for Nutanix Agentic AI, and we are making a long-term commitment to the region and to the talent here," she explained. "It's confirmation the Invest Vancouver 'Invest Talent' initiative is working. Working with industry, we set out to accelerate training, scale, attract investment, and innovate and it's working."
Vancouver's Growing Tech Ecosystem
According to Invest Vancouver, the region serves as the western Canadian anchor for critical infrastructure and cyber-relevant secure digital capability. It is also a major hub for tech giants such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Fortinet, MDA, and the new RBC innovation hub, which collaborates with Borealis AI and Cybersecurity R&D facilities.
Impact on the Economy
The expansion of Vancouver's tech sector is seen as a key driver for British Columbia's economy. With a focus on attracting investment and nurturing local talent, Invest Vancouver aims to solidify the region's position as a global innovation centre. Fitzmaurice emphasized that the initiative is already yielding results, with companies like Nutanix making long-term commitments to the area.
Fitzmaurice joined the podcast "Conversations That Matter" to discuss the dynamic expansion of Vancouver's tech centre and what lies ahead.
