Lightspeed Sells Upserve to Skyview Equity, Exits US Hospitality
Lightspeed Sells Upserve to Skyview Equity

Lightspeed Commerce Inc. has announced the sale of its U.S. hospitality business Upserve to Skyview Equity, marking a strategic shift in the company's focus. The transaction, disclosed on Wednesday, allows Lightspeed to streamline its operations and concentrate on its core retail and payments solutions.

Details of the Sale

The Montreal-based technology company did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. Upserve, which Lightspeed acquired in 2021 for approximately $430 million, provides restaurant management software. Skyview Equity, a private equity firm specializing in technology and software investments, will take over the business.

Strategic Rationale

Lightspeed CEO Dax Dasilva stated that the divestiture aligns with the company's strategy to focus on its primary markets and product lines. "This sale allows us to sharpen our focus on delivering best-in-class solutions for our retail and payments customers," Dasilva said in a press release. The company expects the move to improve operational efficiency and financial performance.

Impact on Customers and Employees

Upserve customers are expected to experience minimal disruption as Skyview Equity plans to continue supporting the platform. Lightspeed will retain a minority stake in Upserve and will collaborate with Skyview to ensure a smooth transition. Employees of Upserve will transition to Skyview Equity as part of the deal.

Market Reaction

Investors reacted positively to the news, with Lightspeed shares rising 3.5% in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Analysts view the sale as a positive step toward simplifying Lightspeed's business model and improving profitability. The company has faced challenges in integrating multiple acquisitions, and this divestiture is seen as a move to streamline operations.

Future Outlook

Lightspeed will continue to serve the hospitality sector through its existing point-of-sale and payments solutions but will no longer operate a dedicated restaurant management platform. The company plans to invest more heavily in its retail and e-commerce offerings, including artificial intelligence and data analytics tools. Skyview Equity aims to grow Upserve's customer base and enhance its product features.
