Caledon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning residents about a surge in distraction thefts occurring in Bolton. These incidents involve thieves using clever tactics to divert victims' attention while accomplices steal wallets, purses, or other valuables.
How Distraction Thefts Work
Police explain that suspects often approach victims in parking lots, shopping plazas, or near banks. Common techniques include asking for directions, dropping items, or claiming the victim has a flat tire. While the victim is distracted, a second suspect quietly removes items from their vehicle or person.
"These thieves are highly organized and rely on speed and confusion," said Constable Sarah Mitchell of the Caledon OPP. "We urge everyone to be aware of their surroundings and secure their belongings at all times."
Recent Incidents in Bolton
Over the past two weeks, several distraction thefts have been reported in the Bolton area. In one case, a woman was approached in a grocery store parking lot by a stranger asking for help finding a lost pet. While she assisted, another individual stole her purse from the shopping cart.
In another incident, a man was distracted by a person claiming he had a flat tire. When he got out to check, his wallet was taken from the front seat of his unlocked car.
Tips to Protect Yourself
The OPP offers the following advice to avoid becoming a victim:
- Keep your valuables out of sight, preferably locked in the trunk or glove compartment.
- Never leave your purse, wallet, or phone unattended in a shopping cart or on a bench.
- Be cautious of strangers approaching you with unsolicited offers or requests.
- If someone tells you something is wrong with your vehicle, verify it yourself or call for assistance before getting out.
- Report any suspicious activity to local police immediately.
What to Do If Targeted
If you suspect you are being set up for a distraction theft, remain calm and do not engage. Move to a safe location and call 911. Provide a description of the suspects and any vehicle involved.
"Distraction thieves prey on kindness and good intentions," added Constable Mitchell. "It's okay to be cautious and say no if something feels off."
