Essex County Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 29-year-old Windsor resident with stunt driving and dangerous operation after allegedly stopping a vehicle travelling at nearly three times the legal speed limit on Highway 3.
Traffic stop on Highway 3
Police conducted a traffic stop on June 21 at approximately 8 a.m. on Highway 3 in the Town of Kingsville after observing a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. According to police, the vehicle was clocked at approximately 239 kilometres per hour in an 80-kilometre-per-hour zone.
The driver, whose identity has not been released, faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and stunt driving. The vehicle was impounded for 14 days, and the driver's licence was suspended for 30 days. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor in September to answer to the charges.
Stunt driving penalties in Ontario
Under Ontario law, stunt driving includes driving 40 kilometres per hour or more over the speed limit on roads with a limit less than 80 kilometres per hour, driving 50 kilometres per hour or more over the speed limit, or engaging in other dangerous behaviours such as preventing other vehicles from passing, intentionally cutting off another vehicle, or driving too close to a vehicle, pedestrian, or fixed object. Drivers caught travelling 150 kilometres per hour or more are subject to stunt driving charges anywhere in the province, including on freeways with a speed limit of 110 kilometres per hour.
If convicted of speeding, demerit points and fines may apply. Going over the speed limit by 50 kilometres per hour or more results in six demerit points. Fines can reach $9.75 per kilometre for speeds exceeding 50 kilometres over the limit, down to $3 per kilometre for speeds less than 20 kilometres over the limit.
