Waterloo Regional Police are warning the public after a distraction theft occurred in Kitchener, where suspects used fake jewelry to steal valuables from a victim. The incident took place on May 31, 2026, in the area of Highland Road West and Fischer-Hallman Road.

According to police, the victim was approached by two suspects who engaged them in conversation and showed them what appeared to be gold jewelry. The suspects then offered to sell the items, but during the exchange, they swapped the fake jewelry for the victim's real valuables without the victim's knowledge.

Police released an image of the counterfeit jewelry used in the theft, urging residents to be cautious when approached by strangers offering items for sale. The suspects are described as two women in their 30s, both with dark hair and medium builds. One was wearing a black dress and the other a white top and blue jeans.

Distraction thefts often involve a suspect diverting the victim's attention while an accomplice steals property. Police recommend the following tips to avoid becoming a victim:
