Police in Winnipeg have revealed that a group from Ontario is responsible for stealing debit and credit cards from gym lockers in the city. The thefts occurred at multiple fitness facilities, where the suspects targeted unlocked lockers while victims were working out.
Details of the thefts
According to authorities, the group would enter gyms, bypass front desk staff, and head directly to locker rooms. They would then open unlocked lockers and remove wallets, purses, and other valuables containing debit and credit cards. The stolen cards were subsequently used to make fraudulent purchases at various retail locations.
Investigation and charges
The Winnipeg Police Service's Financial Crimes Unit launched an investigation after receiving multiple reports from victims. Through surveillance footage and forensic evidence, investigators identified the suspects as being from Ontario. Several individuals have been arrested and charged with theft, fraud, and possession of stolen property. Police believe there may be additional victims and urge anyone who noticed suspicious activity in gym locker rooms to come forward.
Prevention tips
Police are reminding gym-goers to secure their belongings by using locks on lockers and keeping valuables out of sight. They also recommend carrying only essential items and leaving unnecessary credit cards at home. Gym management is encouraged to improve security measures, such as installing cameras and conducting regular patrols in locker areas.
The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are expected. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
