Windsor Police Offer Free Car Seat Inspection Clinic

The Windsor Police Service is hosting a free car seat inspection clinic to help parents and caregivers ensure their child safety seats are correctly installed. The event is scheduled to take place at the police station's parking lot on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Certified technicians will be on hand to check car seats for proper installation, recall status, and age appropriateness. According to police, up to 80% of car seats are installed incorrectly, which can lead to serious injuries in the event of a collision.

“Our goal is to keep children safe on the roads,” said Constable Sarah Mitchell, a spokesperson for the Windsor Police Service. “A properly installed car seat can make all the difference in a crash. We encourage all parents and guardians to take advantage of this free service.”

What to Expect at the Clinic

Participants should bring their vehicle, the car seat, and the child if possible. Technicians will provide hands-on instruction and adjustments. The clinic is first-come, first-served, and no appointment is necessary. However, police recommend arriving early as demand is expected to be high.

The inspection takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes per seat. Parents will receive a checklist and tips for ongoing safety. The event is part of a broader initiative by the Windsor Police to promote traffic safety and reduce preventable injuries.

Why Car Seat Inspections Matter

Transport Canada reports that proper car seat use reduces the risk of fatal injury by up to 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers. Common mistakes include loose harness straps, incorrect recline angles, and using seats that are expired or have been in a crash.

“Many parents don’t realize that car seats have expiration dates,” added Mitchell. “Plastic can degrade over time, especially in extreme temperatures. Our technicians can identify these issues and recommend replacements if needed.”

The Windsor Police Service plans to hold additional clinics throughout the year if this event proves successful. For more information, residents can contact the police non-emergency line or visit the city’s website.

This initiative comes amid a busy season for road travel, with summer vacations approaching. Police urge all drivers to prioritize safety and ensure every passenger is properly restrained.
