Former Edmonton Mayor and Federal Minister Joins Leading Public Affairs Firm

EDMONTON, Alberta – New West Public Affairs has announced the appointment of Amarjeet Sohi, former mayor of Edmonton and federal minister of natural resources, as a senior advisor to the firm. The addition brings decades of experience in both municipal and federal politics to New West's expanding public affairs team.

Extensive Political Background

Prior to his tenure as mayor of Edmonton, Sohi served as a long-time city councillor and held the position of vice president at the Association of Alberta Municipalities. He later transitioned to federal politics, where he was elected as a member of parliament and appointed to cabinet positions.

During his time as minister of natural resources, Sohi played a crucial role in securing the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. His work involved leading comprehensive consultations with Indigenous communities and serving as Alberta's representative at the federal cabinet table.

Infrastructure and Community Development Achievements

As minister of infrastructure and communities, Sohi oversaw the launch of a multi-billion dollar national infrastructure program. He negotiated bilateral agreements with provinces to support major projects across Canada, including public transit systems and affordable housing initiatives.

Among his most significant accomplishments were overseeing the planning, design, and construction of two of Canada's largest infrastructure projects: the New Champlain Bridge in Montreal and the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit.

Municipal Leadership and Collaboration

During his mayoral term in Edmonton, Sohi worked collaboratively with the Alberta government and local business community to secure more than $400 million for a new Downtown Investment Plan. This initiative demonstrated his ability to build partnerships across different levels of government and sectors.

Pragmatic Approach to Public Policy

"Amarjeet Sohi is a passionate Albertan and Canadian who has spent his career working to improve his community," said Monte Solberg, CEO of New West Public Affairs. "He brings deep experience from government and has a genuine commitment to getting things done."

Throughout his political career, Sohi has worked with governments of various political perspectives to advance major infrastructure projects, economic development initiatives, and community-building programs.

Focus on Problem-Solving and Relationship Building

"Public service has always been about bringing people together to solve problems," said Sohi. "I'm excited to join New West and continue that work by helping organizations understand government, build relationships, and move good ideas forward."

Sohi is widely respected across the political spectrum for his pragmatic approach to public policy and his ability to bring diverse stakeholders together to find common ground on complex issues.

Bridge-Building Expertise

"Amarjeet is a bridge-builder at a time when Canada needs to build bridges," added Solberg. "At New West, our focus is to solve problems and deliver results. Amarjeet brings exactly that mindset."
