World Economic Forum President Borge Brende Resigns Amid Epstein Probe
The president and chief executive officer of the World Economic Forum, Borge Brende, officially announced his resignation on Thursday. This decision comes just weeks after the Geneva-based organization initiated an independent investigation into Brende's past relationship with the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Investigation and Resignation
Brende, who has served as president of the WEF since 2017, made his announcement in a formal statement. The move followed disclosures from the United States Department of Justice, which revealed that the Norwegian former foreign minister had engaged in three separate business dinners with Epstein. Additionally, the documents showed communication between Brende and the disgraced financier via email and text messages.
"After careful consideration, I have decided to step down as President and CEO of the World Economic Forum. My time here, spanning 8½ years, has been profoundly rewarding," Brende stated.
He continued, "I am grateful for the incredible collaboration with my colleagues, partners, and constituents, and I believe now is the right moment for the Forum to continue its important work without distractions." Notably, Brende's statement did not reference Jeffrey Epstein directly.
Independent Review Findings
In a separate communication, forum co-chairs Andre Hoffmann and Larry Fink addressed the situation. They confirmed that the independent review conducted by external legal counsel into Brende's connections with Epstein had been completed.
The findings indicated that there were no additional concerns beyond what had already been publicly disclosed regarding the interactions. The co-chairs emphasized that the investigation provided a comprehensive assessment of the matter.
Leadership Transition Plan
The World Economic Forum has established a clear plan for the leadership transition. Alois Zwinggi will assume the role of interim president and CEO effective immediately. The forum's Board of Trustees will oversee the entire transition process, which includes developing and executing a strategy to identify a permanent successor for the position.
This development occurs against the backdrop of ongoing revelations from the Epstein files, which have implicated various high-profile individuals across Europe, including royalty, politicians, and diplomats. The case continues to raise significant questions about the networks and influence of the convicted sex offender.
