Alectra Utilities to Invest $46 Million in Mississauga Electricity Grid Upgrades
$46M Investment for Mississauga Electricity Grid Upgrades

Alectra Utilities has unveiled a comprehensive $46 million capital investment plan for 2026 aimed at significantly upgrading Mississauga's electricity infrastructure. This substantial investment will focus on renewing aging equipment, modernizing the grid, and expanding system capacity to support the continued growth of one of Canada's largest urban centers.

Strengthening Critical Infrastructure for a Growing City

Mississauga's rapid expansion and substantial population have placed increasing demands on the local electricity network. Chris Hudson, Senior Vice President of Network Operations and Safety at Alectra Utilities, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that it will strengthen critical equipment, expand system capacity, and enable faster power restoration during disruptions.

"Mississauga's size and growth place significant demands on local electricity infrastructure," Hudson explained. "This investment will strengthen critical equipment, expand system capacity and enable us to restore power faster during disruptions, helping ensure reliable service for residents and businesses across the city."

Key Components of the $46 Million Investment

The capital work planned for 2026 focuses on three primary areas designed to enhance system reliability and performance:

  1. Renewing Aging Infrastructure: Alectra will invest $29.3 million to replace equipment nearing the end of its useful life, including:
    • $14.3 million for replacing aging infrastructure such as poles, transformers and switchgear
    • $15.0 million for replacing and rehabilitating underground cables using cable injection technology to extend cable life and prevent outages
  2. Modernizing Substations and System Performance: The utility will allocate $10.9 million to enhance grid performance through:
    • $9.3 million for building new substations and renewing existing ones across Mississauga
    • $1.6 million for deploying new automated devices that enable quicker response to grid disturbances and minimize outage impacts
  3. Expanding Grid Capacity: Alectra will invest $4.4 million to connect new customers and ensure the electricity system can safely support continued residential and commercial growth throughout Mississauga.

Multi-Year Approach to Infrastructure Improvement

This investment in Mississauga represents part of Alectra's coordinated, multi-year strategy to strengthen electricity infrastructure across all the communities it serves. As Canada's largest municipally-owned electric utility based on total customers served, Alectra provides electricity to more than one million homes and businesses throughout Ontario's Greater Golden Horseshoe area.

The company's mission focuses on being an energy ally to customers and communities while contributing to economic growth through essential energy infrastructure investments. The planned upgrades will help ensure safe, reliable electricity delivery while supporting Mississauga's ongoing development and modernization needs.
