Pathways Alliance Leadership Transition Occurs During Crucial Carbon Capture Project Phase
Derek Evans, the founding executive chair of the Pathways Alliance, has concluded his tenure with the consortium of Canada's largest oilsands producers. This leadership change comes at a critical juncture as the group approaches significant deadlines for its proposed $16.5-billion carbon capture and storage initiative in northern Alberta.
Executive Leadership Designed as Temporary Role
According to official statements from the Pathways Alliance, Evans' position as executive chair was always intended to be temporary as the organization matured. The consortium confirmed there are currently no plans to fill the vacated position, marking a strategic shift in governance structure.
Pathways president Kendall Dilling acknowledged Evans' contributions in a recent statement, noting that "with Derek's guidance and strong leadership, Pathways has been able to successfully advocate for the oilsands industry and progress the proposed Pathways carbon capture and storage project."
Pivotal Timing for Major Environmental Initiative
The leadership transition occurs during a particularly significant period for the alliance. Member companies are currently engaged in discussions with both the Alberta provincial government and federal authorities regarding the proposed carbon capture and storage project. This initiative represents a cornerstone of the broader energy memorandum of understanding announced by both levels of government in November.
The foundational project involves constructing a 400-kilometre pipeline that would connect multiple oilsands facilities to an underground carbon dioxide storage hub near Cold Lake. Design work on this ambitious infrastructure project has been progressing since its initial unveiling nearly five years ago, though a final investment decision remains pending.
Evans' Legacy and Industry Impact
Derek Evans played an instrumental role in establishing the Pathways Alliance in 2021 and assumed the executive chair position in May 2024. His departure follows his earlier resignation as chief executive of MEG Energy in April 2024, prior to that company's acquisition by Cenovus Energy.
Former Suncor Energy CEO Mark Little, who led the integrated oil producer during the alliance's formation, praised Evans' contributions, stating "Derek was a real force... He's been instrumental in moving this forward." Little further noted Evans' passionate commitment to the project's success.

The Pathways Alliance comprises five major energy companies:
