Striking support workers at 15 Wing Moose Jaw are set to return to work this week after ratifying a new three-year collective agreement with Sodexo Canada, according to union officials. The Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE) Local 40807, representing 35 civilian workers at the Canadian Forces base, announced on Wednesday that members have approved the deal, ending a rotating strike that began on May 12.
Key Terms of the Agreement
The contract, which covers workers subcontracted under the Department of National Defence, includes a 12-per-cent wage increase over three years, a signing bonus, a $2-per-hour training allowance for members instructing new employees, and reduced health benefit premiums. The previous contract expired on December 31, 2023, and negotiations had been ongoing for about a year.
Union Leadership Applauds Solidarity
Cheryl Leonardo, president of PSAC/UNDE Local 40807, expressed gratitude for the support received during the two-week strike. "This agreement did not happen because Sodexo suddenly chose fairness; it happened because we stood together and demanded change," she stated in a news release from the parent union, Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).
Strike and Lockout Dispute Resolved
Workers began strike action in March after negotiations reached an impasse and third-party conciliation failed. Shortly after the strike launched, workers were turned away from scheduled shifts without the required 48-hour lockout notice. PSAC filed an unethical labour practice complaint, which has now been resolved and withdrawn. Workers are expected to return to their duties on Thursday.
The ratification marks the end of a contentious bargaining period, with wages and benefits being the primary issues. The union highlighted that the collective action was crucial in achieving a fair agreement.
