Premier David Eby made the announcement during a press conference in Vancouver, emphasizing the need for sustainable resource development. "We are committed to ensuring that mining in British Columbia proceeds in a way that respects Indigenous rights, protects the environment, and benefits local communities," Eby said.
Details of the Extension
The pause applies to all new mineral claims in the northern half of the province, covering areas such as the Skeena, Stikine, and Liard regions. Existing claims and exploration activities are not affected. The extension provides additional time for the government to develop a comprehensive land-use plan that balances economic opportunities with conservation goals.

Industry representatives expressed disappointment, arguing that the moratorium hinders investment and job creation. "This decision sends the wrong message to investors," said Michael McPhie, president of the Mining Association of British Columbia. "We need a clear path forward that supports responsible mining."
Environmental groups and some Indigenous leaders welcomed the move. "This pause is a critical step toward protecting our lands and waters," said Sarah Robinson, a spokesperson for the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition. "We look forward to meaningful engagement with the province."
