American Sandwich Giant Jimmy John's Arrives in Saskatoon

The popular American sandwich chain Jimmy John's has officially expanded into Saskatchewan, with entrepreneur Jenelle Diederichs opening the province's first location in Saskatoon's Aspen Ridge neighborhood. This marks a significant milestone for the brand's Canadian expansion, which began in November 2024.

From Family Trips to Franchise Ownership

Jenelle Diederichs discovered Jimmy John's during frequent travels to the United States and became enamored with their signature sandwiches. "We travel to the U.S. quite a bit and we enjoyed Jimmy John's there," Diederichs explained. "I did a lot of research into different brands and they really stood out."

What began as a personal appreciation transformed into a business opportunity when Diederichs decided this was the perfect next chapter in her life. "It was a different phase in my life, where I used to be at home with the boys and now they're busy doing their own thing in high school and university," she shared. "I've always kind of been part of their teams, either helping manage or being involved in their teams and their sports. So I thought this was a great way to still be in a team aspect with them."

Accelerating Expansion Plans

Originally, Saskatoon was scheduled for a Phase 3 opening in Jimmy John's Canadian expansion timeline. However, Diederichs's determination changed those plans dramatically. "We were supposed to be a Phase 3 opening in Saskatoon. But I really wanted to open," she revealed. "I found a location and I talked to the franchise owner and really pushed them. So now we are Phase 1 with Toronto and Winnipeg."

This accelerated timeline means Saskatoon now joins major Canadian centers like Toronto and Winnipeg as early adopters of the brand, ahead of other western provinces. "They didn't even have them in Alberta or B.C. yet when we opened," Diederichs noted. "They came to the big Canadian centres and then, Saskatoon."

Record-Breaking Grand Opening

The store's February opening created significant local excitement. "The opening was really exciting," Diederichs recalled. "The first 100 customers got a sandwich and a drink so it was nuts. We opened at 11 a.m. and we were out of sandwiches in 67 minutes. I think it was one of the store records."

The new location has created employment opportunities for local students, with staff coming from St. Joseph's High School, Centennial Collegiate, and the University of Saskatchewan. Diederichs's family is also involved, with her husband and three sons all contributing to the business.

What Makes Jimmy John's Unique

According to Diederichs, several key factors distinguish Jimmy John's from other sandwich chains:

  • Fresh Bread: "It's definitely our bread. The bread is amazing whether it's toasted or not toasted. We bake our breads fresh every four hours and after that we take it and we freeze it and sell it as day old bread the next day. Our bread is key."
  • Premium Ingredients: "And it's our quality of meats. There are things that are specifically made for Jimmy John's. It's the same bread that comes from the States."
  • Signature Touches: "And then we have our Jimmy peppers. They are pickled jalapenos, and they are made just for us. It's our little touches that sets us apart."
  • Exclusive Products: "And we have our own Jimmy chips as well. They are a kettle cooked chip. But they're actually made in Alberta. And they are shipped from Alberta into the U.S."

The commitment to quality extends throughout the operation. "And we're not skipping anything," Diederichs emphasized. "Whether it is our lettuce, or our Hellmann's mayonnaise, there are no shortcuts. The crew starts prep at 8 a.m. We are pulling and stretching our bread. We're making everything fresh in the morning. We are cutting and portioning all our meat. It's a quality thing."
