Tim Hortons' highly anticipated return of its grilled cheese melts has left many Canadian customers disappointed, with complaints of unmelted cheese flooding social media. The restaurant chain relaunched its Cheese Melts and Bacon Melts on May 27, starting at $5.79, citing popular demand. However, instead of gooey, melted cheese, many customers report receiving sandwiches with cold, intact cheese slices.
Social Media Backlash
Reddit user FaytalRush posted a photo of their sandwich on the Tim Hortons subreddit, showing four unmelted cheese slices between white bread. "My grilled cheese melt is not very grilled... Or melted," they wrote. TikTok user Carrie Hoeble shared a video of her sandwich, exclaiming, "They gave me cold cheese on hot bread. The cheese is cold. They didn't even try." Another TikTok user, who grilled their sandwich at home, asked, "Are you really making me melt my own damn cheese?"
Chain's Response
Tim Hortons has sold over 400,000 melts since the relaunch, with the company stating that a "very large majority" met their standards. In an email to National Post, the chain acknowledged the feedback: "What makes a Melt great is the grilled bread and melted cheese — we accept the feedback that we haven't gotten it 100 per cent right, so are working with Tims restaurant owners who are doubling down on training to ensure guests are served a great Melt every time."
Possible Explanations
Former Tim Hortons employees on TikTok suggested that time pressures at drive-thrus may be to blame. One user, desertthorns, said, "My store literally told us to speed up making them in order to make times so we didn't get in trouble by corporate." Another, sleeplessimp, explained, "These sandwiches can take 2-4 minutes to fully cook/melt on the panini press. If you order them through the drive through both you and the worker are screwed. Corporate wants you through the DT in thirty seconds MAX."
Despite the widespread complaints, some customers have posted videos showing perfectly melted sandwiches, drawing comparisons to winning a golden ticket. One TikToker commented, "This is honestly the only one I've seen done right," while another said, "She must be like the golden ticket winner at Willy Wonka."
Looking Ahead
Tim Hortons encourages guests to contact their Guest Services team with feedback. The chain remains committed to improving the product, with increased training for restaurant owners and staff. Whether the melts will regain their beloved status remains to be seen, but for now, many Canadians are left asking, "Where's the melt?"
