Air India Partners with Hughes for Advanced In-Flight Connectivity Across Fleet
Air India Selects Hughes for Fleet-Wide In-Flight Connectivity

Air India has announced a significant partnership with Hughes Network Systems to revolutionize in-flight connectivity across its mixed widebody fleet. The collaboration will deploy a single connectivity platform on Airbus A350-1000, Boeing 787-8, and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, enabling multi-orbit satellite connectivity to support growth, flexibility, and market leadership.

Strategic Digital Transformation Initiative

The selection of Hughes as the technology partner represents a major step in Air India's digital transformation strategy. According to Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Air India, providing always-on broadband internet connectivity has become a fundamental expectation for today's digitally savvy travelers. The airline's vision is to deliver connectivity with home-broadband-like bandwidth and latency on both international and domestic flights.

"Our strategic vision is to provide connectivity with home-broadband like bandwidth and latency on Air India's international and domestic flights so that connecting from our flights feels the same as connecting from home," stated Dr. Ramaswamy.

Technical Implementation and Roadmap

Hughes will leverage Airbus HBCplus technology for A350-1000 aircraft and the RAVE Aerospace solution for Boeing 787-8 and 777-300ER aircraft. The initial implementation applies to both existing and new widebody aircraft in the Air India fleet, with plans to seamlessly upgrade to home-broadband levels within the next two years.

Ramesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice President at Hughes Network Systems, emphasized the company's commitment to advancing in-flight connectivity that empowers airlines to deliver seamless digital experiences. "Our innovative platform not only enhances passenger experience but also drives operational excellence, positioning Air India to deliver an exceptional customer experience," he noted.

Multi-Orbit Connectivity Advantages

The Hughes In-Flight Connectivity solution offers several key advantages:

  • Global coverage with multi-orbit connectivity capabilities
  • Committed performance with flexible business models designed to scale
  • Standardization of plans, pricing, entitlements, and promotions
  • Ability to tailor offers by route, cabin, or customer segment
  • Roadmap to pole-to-pole, low-latency LEO connectivity with minimal aircraft modifications

Reza Rasoulian, SVP and GM of the Aviation Business Unit at Hughes, highlighted how this common solution allows Air India to harmonize passenger experience and operational tools while deploying digital services faster across their fleet.

Regulatory and Coverage Considerations

Dr. Ramaswamy noted that the partnership with Hughes takes into account existing regulatory considerations and satellite coverage capabilities along global flight paths. As Air India becomes the global launch customer for Hughes' in-flight connectivity service, the airline will benefit from a solution specifically designed to address the unique challenges of international aviation connectivity.

The implementation supports Air India's strategy to make onboard connectivity a core part of its brand and loyalty offerings, creating a consistent customer journey across all widebody aircraft regardless of manufacturer.
