Air New Zealand Revolutionizes Economy Travel with Skynest Sleep Pods

Air New Zealand is set to transform long-haul economy travel with the launch of its groundbreaking "Economy Skynest" sleep pods, a world-first innovation designed to provide actual lie-flat rest for passengers. Starting May 18, 2026, travelers can book time in these pods, which debut on ultra-long-haul routes like the 18-hour New York to Auckland flight beginning in November.

Innovative Design and Features

The Skynest setup will be installed on the airline's new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets, with each aircraft featuring six compact sleeping pods stacked like bunk beds. Each pod includes a mattress, bedding, privacy curtain, seat belt, reading light, charging ports, and an amenity kit. Ambient nest lighting is designed specifically for rest, while cabin crew will refresh the space between bookings by swapping out pillows, sheets, and blankets to maintain cleanliness.

How the Skynest Works

Passengers can book a four-hour session in a pod, with one session allowed per person per flight. Prices start at $495 per session. However, there are several important caveats: the pods are strictly for lying down with no room to sit upright, "double-bunking" is prohibited, eating in the pods is not allowed, and children cannot use them. Travelers are also encouraged to minimize perfumes and scents, though snoring is accepted with earplugs provided for all passengers.

Airline's Vision and Context

Air New Zealand CEO Nikhil Ravishankar emphasized that the innovation stems from the airline's experience operating some of the world's longest routes. "New Zealand's unique location means we understand long-haul travel better than anyone," he stated. "Skynest is designed to make a real difference to the journey. It's a simple idea with a powerful impact: Swap the headrest for bedrest, and arrive ready to go."

The Skynest builds upon Air New Zealand's existing "Skycouch" system, which converts economy seats into a flat surface, but requires passengers to climb or crawl into their pod. Ravishankar noted this is another example of how the airline continues to evolve the economy cabin experience, offering travelers more flexibility on long-haul journeys.

Industry Trends in Economy Comfort

Air New Zealand is not alone in rethinking economy comfort. In March 2026, United Airlines unveiled its "Relax Row" economy seats, which convert a trio of seats into a couch or bed. This feature is expected to roll out in 2027 on Boeing 787s and eventually on Boeing 777 aircraft by 2030, with over 200 planes set to include the option. Like Skynest, United pitches this setup as ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers seeking additional space.

The introduction of Economy Skynest represents a significant step forward in making long-haul economy travel more comfortable and restful, addressing a common pain point for passengers on extended flights.
