Icy Roads Cause Multiple Crashes, Close Windsor Expressway

Icy Conditions Create Hazardous Driving Environment Across Windsor

The weekend in Windsor began with dangerous driving conditions as freezing temperatures and light snowfall overnight created treacherous icy roads across the city. Windsor police reported responding to multiple collisions throughout Saturday morning, with the most significant incidents occurring on E.C. Row Expressway.

Expressway Closure and Multiple Collisions

Between approximately 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to nearly a dozen motor vehicle collisions attributed to the hazardous road conditions. The most affected areas included a section of E.C. Row between Huron Church Road and Central Avenue, as well as the intersection at Provincial and Walker roads.

The situation became so severe that E.C. Row Expressway was temporarily closed in both directions while emergency crews worked to clear the scene and assist those involved in the various collisions. The icy conditions made it difficult for both regular motorists and emergency vehicles to maintain proper traction on the roadway.

Police Response and Safety Reminders

During the response efforts, a police cruiser was struck from behind on E.C. Row near Walker Road while officers were attending to another incident. Despite the multiple collisions, police reported that all drivers remained at the scenes of their respective accidents.

Only one person required transportation to hospital with minor injuries, though the collisions did disrupt other community activities. At least one farm vendor was unable to make opening day at the Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market due to an en route crash.

"Police remind motorists that black ice can form quickly and is often difficult to see," according to official statements. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns when encountering potentially icy conditions.

Weather Conditions and Public Works Response

The hazardous conditions resulted from freezing temperatures combined with light snowfall that occurred overnight. The public works department was notified of the dangerous road conditions by police and scrambled to treat the affected roadways.

Looking ahead, Environment Canada forecasts suggest little chance of similar icy conditions on Monday or Tuesday. Monday's forecast calls for cloudy conditions with a high of 21°C, accompanied by southwest winds of 30 km/h that may gust to 50 km/h in the morning. The evening brings a 40 percent chance of rain showers and a risk of thunderstorms, with temperatures dropping to a low of 12°C.

Tuesday is expected to follow a similar pattern, with a 40 percent chance of rain in the morning and early afternoon, along with another risk of thunderstorms. The high temperature is forecasted to reach 23°C, with southwest winds at 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h, before dropping to a low of 5°C in the evening.
