Lakeshore Launches Free Beach Bus Pilot to Ease Congestion

The Municipality of Lakeshore has launched a free Beach Bus pilot program aimed at easing traffic congestion at the popular Belle River waterfront. The new service, which began on June 19, 2026, offers residents and visitors a convenient alternative to driving, with the goal of reducing the number of vehicles in the area during peak summer weekends.

Free Weekend Service

The Beach Bus operates on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., running a continuous loop between designated parking areas and the Belle River waterfront. The service is completely free of charge, with no tickets or reservations required. Buses run every 20 minutes, ensuring minimal wait times for passengers.

Parking and Drop-Off Points

Riders can park at the Lakeshore Municipal Building at 419 Notre Dame Street in Belle River, where ample parking is available. From there, the bus takes passengers directly to the waterfront, with stops at key locations including the marina, the beach, and the main shopping district. The route is designed to provide easy access to all major attractions in the area.

Community Response

Early feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have praised the initiative for making the waterfront more accessible while reducing the stress of finding parking. Local businesses have also expressed support, hoping the increased foot traffic will boost sales during the summer season.

“We’ve seen a lot of families using the bus already,” said a Lakeshore spokesperson. “It’s a great way to enjoy the waterfront without the hassle of driving and parking.”

Environmental Benefits

In addition to easing congestion, the Beach Bus pilot is expected to have environmental benefits by reducing emissions from idling cars. The municipality is considering expanding the service if the pilot proves successful.

Future Plans

The pilot program will run until Labour Day, after which the municipality will evaluate its effectiveness. Officials are already exploring the possibility of extending the service to other popular destinations in Lakeshore, such as the Lakeshore Trail and the Belle River Marina. A survey will be available for riders to provide feedback throughout the summer.
