Ontario Provincial Police have identified the pilot who died following a devastating mid-air collision between two small aircraft on Saturday as a 28-year-old man from Île-Bizard.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The incident occurred near Martintown in South Glengarry, approximately 25 kilometres west of the Ontario-Quebec border. According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), the pilot was participating in a training exercise when the collision between a Cessna 172 Skyhawk and a Piper PA-44 Seminole took place.
One of the aircraft managed to land safely following the impact. Tragically, the other plane crashed in a wooded area. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the downed aircraft, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Response
The TSB has confirmed it has deployed a team of investigators to the crash site to determine the cause of the accident. Both planes involved were owned by Cornwall Aviation, a local flight school based in the area.
In a social media post made on Saturday, Cornwall Aviation expressed that the crash resulted in a “very difficult day for our aviation community.” The post added, “Nothing can prepare you for such tragedy,” and requested that thoughts be with the family of those directly affected.
The Ontario Provincial Police stated on Monday that the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident remain under investigation by authorities.
