The George Massey Tunnel will be closed in both directions overnight this weekend as crews carry out essential maintenance work. The closure is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Saturday and continue until 7 a.m. on Sunday, according to transportation officials.
Counterflow System Affected
The tunnel, which connects Richmond to Delta under the Fraser River, currently operates a counterflow system during peak travel times. This system allows three lanes to operate in the direction of heaviest traffic, typically inbound to Vancouver in the morning and outbound in the afternoon. During the overnight closure, all lanes will be shut down to allow workers to perform necessary repairs and inspections.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes, such as the Alex Fraser Bridge or the Knight Street Bridge, to avoid delays. Transportation officials recommend planning ahead and allowing extra travel time.
Previous Closures
This is not the first time the Massey Tunnel has undergone overnight closures. Similar maintenance work has been conducted in the past to ensure the aging infrastructure remains safe and operational. The tunnel, which opened in 1959, carries approximately 80,000 vehicles daily.
Officials say the work is part of regular maintenance and is not related to any specific incident. The closure is expected to be completed on schedule, with the tunnel reopening to traffic by Sunday morning.
