Deadly Collision Shuts Down Major Calgary Route
A man is dead following a serious three-vehicle collision on Sarcee Trail in Calgary on Friday evening. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. when a car traveling northbound entered the southbound lanes, leading to a chain-reaction crash.
Sequence of Events in the Crash
According to police, the driver of the car, a man in his 40s, was driving in the wrong direction. His vehicle first side-swiped a minivan before colliding head-on with an approaching SUV. The force of the impacts caused significant damage to all vehicles involved.
The driver of the minivan, identified as a man in his 60s, and a teenage passenger in his vehicle were both treated for minor injuries at the scene. The driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police Investigation and Road Closures
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Calgary police have confirmed they are investigating both speed and potential impairment as contributing factors in this tragic incident.
The collision resulted in the complete closure of southbound Sarcee Trail between Bow Trail and 17th Avenue for several hours as collision reconstructionists worked at the scene. The roadway has since been reopened to traffic.
