Semi-Truck Collision Damages Saskatoon Overpass, Reduces Freeway Lanes
Semi-Truck Collision Damages Saskatoon Overpass, Reduces Lanes

A major traffic incident in Saskatoon has resulted in significant damage to a key overpass, leading to lane reductions and ongoing repairs. According to Saskatoon Police, a semi-trailer hauling heavy equipment collided with the concrete structure at the Circle Drive overpass on Highway 11, near the cloverleaf intersection with Highway 16, on Thursday afternoon around 5 p.m.

Extensive Damage and Immediate Response

The collision occurred when the semi-trailer, traveling northbound on Highway 11 from Regina, was too high for the overpass, causing substantial damage to the infrastructure. Police reported that the impact was severe, necessitating immediate closures of northbound traffic on Highway 11 and eastbound traffic on Circle Drive for several hours.

Emergency services, including city engineers, police, and collision analysts, were quickly dispatched to the scene. These analysts collaborated with the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol to investigate the cause and assess the full extent of the damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.

Traffic Disruptions and Detours

Following the initial closures, one lane in each direction was reopened to alleviate congestion, but significant disruptions persisted. Northbound semi-trucks on Highway 11 were rerouted via Township 360 and Range Road 3050 to bypass the affected area. Meanwhile, southbound traffic on Highway 11 and westbound traffic on Highway 16 remained unaffected, allowing some flow to continue.

The city has not yet determined the exact cost or scope of repairs needed for the overpass, as assessments are ongoing. This incident highlights the challenges of maintaining critical transportation infrastructure in urban areas.

Ongoing Investigations and Community Impact

Authorities are working diligently to complete their investigation and plan for necessary repairs. The collision has underscored the importance of height clearance regulations for commercial vehicles, especially in densely trafficked zones like the Circle Drive cloverleaf.

Residents and commuters are advised to expect continued delays and to seek alternative routes until the overpass is fully restored. This event serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with oversized loads on highways and the need for vigilant safety measures.
