TTC Line 2 Faces Major Service Disruption After Hydraulic Oil Spill

A hydraulic oil spill overnight at the TTC's Old Mill station has led to a partial closure of Line 2, the Bloor-Danforth line, on Tuesday morning, causing significant disruptions for Toronto commuters.

Immediate Service Suspension and Shuttle Buses

There is currently no subway service between Jane and Islington stations, with shuttle buses operating in the interim to transport affected passengers. TTC senior communications advisor Susan Nguyen described the situation as a "major service disruption" and advised commuters to leave plenty of extra travel time, noting that "those buses are expected to be crowded and slow-moving on Bloor Street."

As an alternative, customers can take GO Transit from Kipling Station, which Nguyen identified as the fastest route to Union Station for those heading downtown. TTC fares are accepted on GO Transit at several stations including Dundas West, Kipling, Bloor, Union, and Mimico.

Crews Working to Address the Spill

According to officials, the hydraulic leak occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. during overnight track work, though the spill happened prior to the start of scheduled maintenance activities. Crews are working "safely and quickly" to clean up the spill and conduct necessary safety inspections before service can be restored.

TTC CEO Mandeep Lali issued a lengthy statement on X addressing the disruption: "This morning, we let our customers down. I am truly sorry. We know many of you rely on TTC to get to work, school, and essential commitments. When we fall short, the impact is immediate and personal."

Safety First Approach and Comprehensive Review

Lali emphasized that while safety remains the top priority, "this does not absolve us of the responsibility to provide the reliable service you expect." He confirmed that multiple teams have been deployed to assist riders, including:

  • TTC Special Constables
  • Provincial Offences Officers
  • Toronto police traffic management
  • Additional station staff

The TTC has ordered an immediate and comprehensive review of the incident to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. "We will identify the root causes and implement clear, corrective actions at pace," Lali stated. "The goal is simple: this must not happen again."

No Timeline for Service Restoration

As of Tuesday morning, the TTC has not provided an estimated time for when full subway service will resume on the affected section of Line 2. Commuters are advised to continue checking for updates and plan for extended travel times throughout the day.
