Toronto Police announced Thursday afternoon that Esther, the 14-year-old girl who had been missing for nearly two weeks, has been found safe and sound. The announcement came via social media, followed by a press conference at Earl Bales Park at 3 p.m.
The teenager, who is on the autism spectrum, was located in a home in Etobicoke around 1 p.m. She had been missing since the late evening of May 15, sparking a citywide search and widespread community concern.
Investigation Underway
Supt. Don Belanger provided details at the news conference, stating that Esther appears to be in good physical condition. She was taken to hospital for evaluation of potential physical injuries and the emotional toll the prolonged disappearance may have caused. Police are now investigating whether any criminality was involved in her disappearance and the circumstances surrounding her being found in the Etobicoke home.
Belanger declined to comment on who was in the home or how many individuals were present when Esther was found. No charges have been laid at this time. It remains unclear whether the discovery qualifies for the $25,000 reward that had been offered for information leading to her safe return.
Community Efforts and Timeline
Esther's disappearance had gripped the city, with security footage showing her at a Popeyes Restaurant on Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue on May 16, and later at the Mount Dennis TTC station. Her parents, Shira and Joseph, had pleaded for her return, emphasizing that she was not in trouble and that they only wanted her safe.
The search involved Toronto Police, Shomrim Toronto, and numerous community volunteers, including Matthew Taub, Corey Herscu, Meir Weinstein, and others. Despite extensive efforts, including searches of Earl Bales Park and air support, no confirmed sightings had been reported until the breakthrough.
Esther's mother had previously expressed her love and concern, stating, "Esti, my love, if you are watching this, please come home. We love you so much and we miss you terribly." The family and community had been praying for her safe return, and those prayers have now been answered.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The focus now is on Esther's recovery and understanding the events of the past 13 days.
