The Calgary Public Library is launching a new initiative to support early literacy development by offering free kindergarten book bags to families at library locations across the city. These tote bags are filled with resources designed to help families cultivate reading habits, including tips for preparing for kindergarten and activity sheets that promote literacy and numeracy skills.
Building Reading Habits from an Early Age
Kate Schutz, senior service designer at the Calgary Public Library, emphasized the importance of early literacy skills. 'Sitting together and having that time to read together really builds a reading habit in your child,' she said. 'It is really important that kids are read to and that they have access to high quality, diverse books. This helps prepare their language skills, background knowledge, and vocabulary.'
The program aims to address a concerning trend: one in four children in Canada are not reading at their grade level by Grade 3. According to the Kids Literacy Collective, this milestone marks a shift from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn,' and struggling with reading can lead to difficulties in other subjects. Schutz noted that when reading is not enjoyable, children tend to avoid it, creating a cycle that makes it harder to catch up.
Overcoming Barriers to Literacy
Many families face barriers such as limited time, lack of access to books, or low literacy levels at home. Schutz clarified a common misconception: reading at home does not have to be in English to prepare children for school. 'There is so much you can learn in your home language that will help you to read in English later,' she explained.
Library staff will assist families in selecting age-appropriate books to fill their bags. Library cards are free, so families without one can sign up during their visit. The kindergarten book bags are available at all library locations except Rocky Ridge and Skyview, and the program will run throughout spring and summer until supplies are exhausted.
Additional Programs and Events
In addition to the book bags, the Calgary Public Library hosts kindergarten family events at various locations during spring and summer. The library also offers a summer reading program to encourage children to keep reading throughout the year. These initiatives aim to foster a love of reading and ensure that children start school with the foundational skills they need for success.
Schutz highlighted the long-term impact of early literacy: 'When you are struggling to read, it becomes less enjoyable, and you do it less, making it harder. Reading affects all subjects, from math to science.' Studies show that a lack of literacy skills can have a ripple effect into adulthood, affecting sociability, employment, income, and health.
The Calgary Public Library's efforts are part of a broader response to declining foundational reading skills observed across North America since the COVID-19 pandemic. By providing free resources and support, the library aims to help families build strong reading habits that will benefit children throughout their lives.
