The Government of Nova Scotia has announced a new affordable housing project on Pleasant Street in Wolfville, aimed at serving the Acadia University community. The development will feature 40 mixed-income units, designed to accommodate students, faculty, and local residents.
Project Details
The Pleasant Street property, as pictured in a release from the province, will be transformed into a modern housing complex. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with completion targeted for 2027. The units will include a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments, with rents set at rates affordable for households earning between $30,000 and $75,000 annually.
Community Impact
Local officials have praised the initiative, noting that it addresses a critical need for affordable housing in the town. Wolfville Mayor Wendy Donovan stated, "This project will help ensure that our community remains vibrant and inclusive, providing much-needed housing options for those who live and work here." Acadia University President Dr. Peter Ricketts added, "Affordable housing is essential for attracting and retaining students and staff. We are grateful for this partnership with the province."
The project is part of a broader provincial strategy to create 2,500 new affordable housing units across Nova Scotia by 2028. Funding comes from the Canada-Nova Scotia Bilateral Agreement under the National Housing Strategy, with contributions from both federal and provincial governments.
Design and Sustainability
The building will be designed to meet high energy efficiency standards, incorporating green technologies such as solar panels and heat pumps. It will also include common areas, laundry facilities, and bicycle storage. The development is located within walking distance of Acadia University's campus and downtown Wolfville, promoting walkability and reducing reliance on cars.
Next Steps
Residents and stakeholders are invited to provide input during a public consultation session scheduled for June 15, 2026. Following feedback, the final design will be submitted for municipal approval. Construction is slated to begin in September 2026, with occupancy anticipated by early 2028.
