Calgary School Board Removes 44 Titles Following Alberta's Explicit Content Policy
The Calgary Board of Education has confirmed the removal of 44 titles from school libraries across the district. This action comes in direct response to a provincial ministerial order that mandates stricter standards for literary materials available to students.
Provincial Directive Drives Removal Process
Alberta's Standards for the Selection, Availability and Access of School Literary Materials, which took effect on January 5, requires school authorities to ensure that materials containing explicit depictions of sexual acts are not accessible to children in educational settings. The order specifically prohibits such materials from being included in school library collections.
Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides emphasized that the policy aims to protect children from age-inappropriate content. "We have been absolutely clear from the start: this policy is about protecting children from explicit images of child molestation, sex toy use, penetration, masturbation and other age-inappropriate images," Nicolaides stated. "Nothing more."
Composition of the Removed Materials
The CBE's removal list consists of:
- 39 graphic novels
- 5 traditional books
According to the board, these titles were identified as depicting activities or actions of a distinctly sexual nature as defined by the ministerial order. The majority were found to contravene sections concerning:
- Sexual contact involving genitalia, mouth, hands, fingers, or other body parts with unclothed genitalia, pubic areas, buttocks, anus, or female breasts
- Depictions of masturbation, including touching of one's own genitals or anus with hands, fingers, artificial sexual organs, or substitutes
- Scenes depicting penetration of the penis into vagina or anus
Implementation Timeline and Process
School authorities across Alberta were required to submit lists of materials to be removed by October 31, 2025. The CBE provided its four-page listing to Minister Nicolaides, identifying itself as the school authority intending to remove the specified books.
CBE spokeswoman Joanne Anderson confirmed the board's compliance with the provincial directive. "The CBE flagged and removed these 44 titles from school collections based on the direction given in the province's ministerial order," she explained.
Exceptions and Clarifications
The ministerial order does include exceptions for materials required for reference purposes and those not narrative in nature, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries. However, the removed titles did not fall under these exemptions.
Minister Nicolaides clarified that the provincial government did not create the specific list of titles removed by the CBE. "The Government of Alberta did not create this list," he noted. "Any questions and or rationale for pulling these specific titles will need to be directed toward the Calgary Board of Education."
This development follows ongoing discussions about censorship and appropriate content in educational settings, with librarian groups expressing concerns about potential overreach in book selection policies.
