In a striking display of technological advancement, First Lady Melania Trump presided over an unusual event at the White House on Wednesday, walking alongside an artificial intelligence-powered robot before outlining a futuristic vision where children are instructed by a "humanoid educator."
A Robotic Entrance at the East Room
Trump was hosting the international Fostering the Future Together summit on technology and education in the East Room. She made her entrance accompanied by a white-and-black robot that matched her stride, albeit somewhat unsteadily at times. The walking, talking "Figure 3" robot, developed by the AI robotics company Figure based in San Jose, California, greeted attendees in multiple languages with a female voice, thanked its host, and then exited the room.
"My first American-made humanoid guest in the White House," Trump proclaimed, highlighting the significance of the moment.
Envisioning Plato: The AI Teacher of Tomorrow
Addressing delegates at the two-day summit, the First Lady spoke enthusiastically about an imaginary robot teacher named Plato, a nod to the ancient Greek philosopher. She described this tech-driven guide as possessing a profound understanding of every major subject, including classical studies, and being accessible "in the comfort of your home."
Arguing that artificial intelligence will increasingly take human form, Trump suggested that the robotic Plato would "provide a personalized experience adoptive to the needs of each student." She emphasized, "Plato is always patient and always available. Predictably, our children will develop deep, critical thinking and independent reasoning abilities."
A Mother's Perspective on Technology
The 55-year-old mother of son Barron contended that introducing Plato to the world would foster a "more well-rounded lifestyle for our children," blending cutting-edge technology with educational enrichment.
International Gathering of First Spouses
The summit brought together fellow "first spouses" from over 40 countries in Washington, D.C. Notable attendees included Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron; Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine; and Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, all present across the two days.
Brief Appearance and Panel Discussion
During Wednesday's session, Trump was reportedly in the room for only seven minutes to deliver her opening remarks, departing before a panel discussion on AI and education commenced. This brief appearance underscored the event's focus on high-level introductions and visionary statements rather than prolonged engagement.
The event marks a significant step in promoting AI integration into educational systems, as envisioned by key political figures on a global stage.
