Windsor City Hall Ice Rink Concludes Successful Winter Season

With the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, the outdoor ice skating rink at Windsor City Hall Square has officially closed for the winter season. The city announced the seasonal closure on Monday afternoon, marking the end of the rink's first operational winter.

Transition to Spring Operations

City staff have begun installing fencing around the rink area as they prepare to remove the ice surface and seasonal decorations. This process will transform the space from a winter skating destination to a spring and summer gathering area.

"The first year of the new City Hall Square ice rink was a great success," the city stated in its official advisory. "The rink quickly became a vibrant community gathering space, hosting a variety of events and providing residents and visitors with fun outdoor skating experiences throughout the winter."

Year-Round Community Space

The 26-by-60-meter oval-shaped rink, located immediately north of city hall, opened approximately three months ago in December as a free public facility. During warmer months, the concrete pad transforms into a multipurpose gathering space featuring:

  • A central water feature that will operate throughout spring and summer
  • Landscaped surroundings with tables and seating
  • Decorative lighting displays
  • Event hosting capabilities

The space includes a pavilion housing public washrooms and a Zamboni machine for ice maintenance during winter operations.

Replacement for Previous Facility

This new year-round event area replaces the former ice rink at Charles Clark Square, which city council voted to decommission in 2022 after learning that necessary repairs would have cost approximately $1 million. The comprehensive City Hall Square and civic esplanade project, including the ice rink and associated amenities, eventually reached a total cost of $15,455,000.

"The city thanks residents for making the downtown skating season a success and looks forward to welcoming the community back next winter," officials added in their statement.

The seasonal closure represents a routine transition as Windsor prepares its public spaces for changing weather conditions and community needs throughout the year.
