Calgary Public Library Launches AI Art Residency to Explore Technology's Creative Impact

The Calgary Public Library is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to investigate the multifaceted relationship between artificial intelligence and artistic expression. Through a newly announced creative residency program, the institution aims to critically examine AI's growing influence in the creative sphere while engaging the public in meaningful dialogue.

Demystifying AI Through Artistic Exploration

From June 29 to September 4, the library will host a selected artist whose work incorporates artificial intelligence technologies. According to library officials, this residency seeks to demystify AI and foster critical evaluation of its applications in creative fields. Millicent Mabi, the library's director of programming, emphasized the program's exploratory nature, stating it will address the questions AI raises at the intersection of technology and art.

"AI has become increasingly prevalent in our community, and there's a clear public need to help Calgarians navigate the challenges and opportunities this technology presents," Mabi explained. "We're looking to gain perspective from the arts community about how AI is being used creatively in our city."

Open to Diverse Artistic Disciplines

The residency welcomes applicants from various artistic backgrounds, including music, sculpture, painting, and other creative forms. The selection process aims to uncover the breadth of AI-enhanced creativity currently emerging in Calgary. Mabi noted that the call for applications has already generated significant interest, though the exact proportion of responses from practicing artists remains unclear.

Applicants must demonstrate peer recognition as AI artists and possess experience working with diverse audiences, mentoring others, and communicating effectively. The selected resident will receive compensation up to $8,000, depending on hours worked, with applications accepted until April 7. A final candidate will be chosen in mid-April.

Public Engagement Through Workshops and Presentations

The chosen artist will be expected to facilitate interactive workshops and presentations at the Calgary Public Central Library in East Village, engaging community members in hands-on exploration of AI's creative potential. This public-facing component represents a core objective of the residency—to help community members understand and participate in discussions about AI's evolving role in art.

"We hope this program will help the community understand and take part in that discussion," Mabi stated, acknowledging the polarized perceptions surrounding AI technology. "Some view it negatively as potentially misleading or plagiarizing human creativity, while others see positive applications that create efficiencies."

Local Artist Praises Timely Initiative

Calgary native Bruce Callow, who has conducted workshops blending musical creativity with AI at the Central Public Library and senior residences locally and internationally, praised the library's initiative as particularly timely. "Whether people like it or not, AI is here to stay," said Callow, who has also utilized the technology in video production.

While expressing caution about potential exploitative uses of AI, Callow emphasized its capacity to enhance genuine creativity. "On the negative side, some recording artists might use it merely for profit, but positively, it can help reduce production costs," he noted. "Anything that promotes creativity has to be a good thing."

Part of Broader AI Programming

This residency represents just one component of the library's expanding AI-related programming, according to Mabi. The institution plans additional initiatives to address artificial intelligence's growing presence in creative and community contexts. Those interested in applying for the residency can contact residencies@calgarylibrary.ca for further information.

Through this innovative program, the Calgary Public Library positions itself at the forefront of examining how emerging technologies intersect with human creativity, providing a platform for critical discussion and public engagement with one of today's most transformative technological developments.
