OCAD University is set to celebrate four distinguished individuals who have made remarkable contributions to design, arts and culture, and philanthropy. The university will confer honorary doctorate degrees upon Rita Davies, Joshua Greer, Tanya Talaga, and Ash K. Prakash during its Convocation ceremonies on June 19, 2026.
Honorees and Their Achievements
The honorary degree recipients represent a diverse range of fields and accomplishments. Rita Davies, a cultural visionary, has spent over three decades transforming Toronto and Ontario's artistic landscape. As the first executive director of the Toronto Arts Council, she championed the arts and oversaw the groundbreaking report Cultural Equity, which became a model for arts funding bodies globally. She also served as the first executive director of the City of Toronto’s Culture Division, spearheading inclusive programs and vibrant arts spaces like Nuit Blanche.
Joshua Greer is an innovative entrepreneur and inventor with more than 30 years of experience in entertainment and health care technology. At RealD, he designed the world's first all-digital 3D projection system, revolutionizing cinematic experiences and setting the gold standard for 3D cinema.
Tanya Talaga is an award-winning journalist, author, and filmmaker known for her powerful storytelling and advocacy. Her work often highlights Indigenous issues and social justice, earning her widespread recognition. Ash K. Prakash is a distinguished scholar and philanthropist whose contributions have significantly impacted education and community development.
University Leadership's Statement
OCAD University President and Vice-Chancellor Ana Serrano expressed pride in the honorees, stating, "Through their unique accomplishments, these remarkable individuals embody OCAD University’s mission of imagining and creating a joyful, equitable, and sustainable world – a world where art, design, and philanthropy are catalysts for positive change." She added that as the university approaches its 150th anniversary, the recipients inspire continued creative impact across all sectors.
Convocation Ceremonies
The four honorary doctorate recipients will join more than 800 students from OCAD U’s Faculty of Design, Faculty of Art, Faculty of Arts and Science, and the School of Graduate Studies at two Convocation ceremonies on June 19. The events will celebrate the achievements of both the graduates and the honorees.
This recognition underscores OCAD University's commitment to fostering creativity and innovation, honoring individuals who have shaped the cultural and technological landscape in Canada and beyond.
