Clara A.B. Joseph Named Calgary's Eighth Poet Laureate

University of Calgary English professor and renowned poet Clara A.B. Joseph has been named the City of Calgary's eighth Poet Laureate. The announcement was made at Calgary City Hall on Tuesday morning. Joseph will replace Shone Thistle and serve in the role until 2028.

About Clara A.B. Joseph

Joseph's poetry collections include The Face of the Other, Dandelions for Bhabha, and M/OTHER. She has also written two books about the Thomas Christians of India. In her role as Poet Laureate, Joseph will produce work that is reflective of Calgary's landscape, cityscape, and civic identity, and may raise awareness of local issues. She will also perform her work at city events, libraries, schools, and community organizations.

Selection Process

Joseph was chosen by a selection committee. The Poet Laureate program was established in 2011. Previous laureates include Kris Demeanor (2012-2014), derek beaulieu, Micheline Maylor, Sheri-D Wilson, Natalie Meisner, Wakefield Brewster, and Shone Thistle.
