Edmonton Indie Bookstore Extravaganza Thrives in Third Year

The third annual Edmonton Indie Bookstore Extravaganza is set to take place this Saturday and Sunday, celebrating the city's vibrant independent bookstore scene. The event, which has grown significantly since its inception, now includes 16 participating shops across Edmonton, including two pop-ups at Felice Cafe near the stadium.

Passport Program and Prizes

Visitors can pick up a special passport at any participating store and collect stamps as they explore. The more stamps collected, the better the chance to win book-related prize packages and gift cards. The event also features opportunities to meet shop cats, dogs, and local authors.

Free Shuttle Service

To make the event accessible, two free charter ETS shuttles will operate on the north and south sides, connecting clusters of bookstores. Organizers describe the event as a self-directed vacation at home, free of charge.

Background and Growth

Co-founder Céline Chuang, co-owner of Paper Birch Books, notes that the first year saw about 1,000 participants, doubling to over 2,000 last year. Many stores reported that the Extravaganza Saturday was their busiest day ever. The event aligns with Canadian Independent Bookstore Day.

Special Offers and Activities

Participating stores are offering extended hours and unique deals. Porch Light Books will give Made By Marcus free scoop cards to the first 100 customers and a $20 gift card to every 20th customer. Bailey Books in St. Albert will host food trucks both days. Audreys Books will hide a golden ticket worth a year of free audiobooks on Saturday. Paper Birch Books will remove indoor seating and set up a patio to manage crowds.
