Britney Spears appeared to nod to the public scrutiny stemming from her DUI arrest back in March in a couple of cryptic Instagram posts last week.
The 'Piece of Me' singer, whose fame predates the camera phone, took to Instagram last Friday to tell followers, 'If you're one of those mean girls pointing and laughing and looking at your phone in the audience just look up today... River sends you guys a message!!!!!!!!'
Later on Friday, she shared one of her signature dance videos and wrote, 'When I moved out of the country for a while I changed my name for some reason and the mean girls stopped laughing!!!!! Damn I miss it there.'
With comments disabled across the pop star's social media accounts, people did not have the chance to ask any follow-up questions about Spears' allusions to living abroad or her supposed name change. Though Spears announced that she had relocated to Mexico to escape 'cruel' paparazzi in a December 2024 Instagram video, an anonymous source shot down the claim in a report for The Hollywood Reporter days later. It is unclear whether that move may have, in fact, happened out of the public eye.
Fans Catch the 'River' Reference
Fans familiar with the Spears deep cuts may have clocked her reference to 'River' in the first post. In January 2023, the star wrote on Instagram that she had taken a new name while warning readers, 'don't underestimate the power of purity. I see right through it all... it has liquid and is wet... it's playful and has mass!!!'
'I changed my name to River Red!!! Yet the fire is where it illuminates... to stare at it and jump right in with no fear at all!!!!'
She updated the name on her Instagram page to 'Maria River Red' that July, and 'Xila Maria River Red' in February 2024. The pseudonym, along with all Spears' previous posts, was scrubbed from her social media last November after she briefly went dark and then reactivated her account.
DUI Arrest and Legal Consequences
Long a tabloid fixture, Spears found herself in the headlines once again when she was arrested on March 4 for driving erratically. A blood test showed she was driving under the influence, and she subsequently checked into a treatment facility.
Officially charged in April, Spears accepted the terms of a plea deal in May, agreeing to 12 months of probation, one day in jail (for which she was granted time served) and a $571 fine. She was also ordered to schedule regular, documented sessions with both a psychologist and psychiatrist, as well as complete a DUI class.
