Calgarians Filipe Masetti and Clara Daval are set to compete in the 12th season of The Amazing Race Canada, as announced by CTV on Tuesday. The husband-and-wife team met in Patagonia in 2017 during a horseback trip across the Americas and have been inseparable ever since.
From Patagonia to the Race
Masetti, a 39-year-old Brazilian-born horseback guide and public speaker, met Daval, a 32-year-old Argentinian student from Lago Puelo, while leading a horseback expedition. Daval later joined him for a month-long ride through southern Argentina. The couple now resides in Calgary.
“I think the other teams have no idea what is about to happen here,” Masetti said in the couple’s introduction video on YouTube. “We are going to be coming in hot, we are going to be coming in hard. We have seen this, we have imagined it, we watched the show so many times, and we are ready for whatever comes our way.”
Prize and Plans
The winning team will receive $250,000 and a trip around the world. If Masetti and Daval win, they plan to use the money to buy a ranch, which Masetti vows to call “The Amazing Ranch Canada.”
Masetti praised his wife, saying, “She’s beautiful, she’s smart, she’s feisty, she’s Argentinian, and she is going to help me win the race.”
Other Teams in Season 12
The 10-team lineup includes a diverse group of competitors from across Canada. Among them are DJ Keisha Gordon of Edmonton and her best friend Nova Stevens, a model and activist from Vancouver who was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2020. The two met in 2010 while studying at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary.
Metis and Cree sisters Chayla Rain and Cyana Marie Sage of Edmonton are granddaughters of Thelma Chalifoux, the first Metis woman appointed to the Canadian Senate. Hamilton, Ont., twin sisters Christina Liao, a corporate lawyer, and Elizabeth Liao, a family physician and obstetrician, will also compete. Canadian rap superstar Maestro Fresh Wes will race alongside longtime friend and fellow hip-hop artist Duane “D.O.” Gibson.
First Episode and Calgary’s Past Success
The first episode takes teams to Whistler, B.C., where they will face physically and mentally challenging activities. Calgarians have a strong track record on the show: Ty Smith and Kat Kastner won Season 9 in 2023, and Courtney Berglind and Adam Kovacs were crowned Season 6 winners in 2018 during a finale in Banff.
