Chilli Denies MAGA Ties After Trump PAC Donations

TLC Star Chilli Clarifies Political Stance Amid Donation Reports

Rozonda Thomas, the celebrated singer known globally as Chilli from the legendary 1990s girl group TLC, has publicly distanced herself from former President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. This clarification follows recent revelations that she contributed financially to Trump's political action committees during the 2024 election cycle.

Donation Details and Initial Backlash

According to a report first published by the MeidasTouch Network on Saturday, Chilli donated nearly $800 to Trump's PACs as part of his reelection campaign efforts. Federal Election Commission records, later corroborated by HuffPost, show additional contributions linked to her name and a Georgia address. These include $63 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee and $7 to Senator Ted Cruz, the Republican representative from Texas.

The donation news emerged just weeks after Chilli faced significant criticism on various internet forums. She was accused of resharing an Instagram post that promoted a baseless conspiracy theory alleging that former First Lady Michelle Obama is transgender. Notably, Chilli follows several prominent MAGA figures on social media, including Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, commentator Tomi Lahren, and Donald Trump Jr., who himself entertained the Obama theory during his father's campaign.

Chilli's Public Response and Explanation

In a detailed social media post released on Saturday, Chilli firmly stated, "I am not MAGA" and does not endorse "any of the policies that are causing great harm to the American people." She attributed the donations to a misunderstanding, explaining that she believed she was supporting causes related to combating human trafficking and assisting veterans.

"I made a mistake too many make: I did not read the fine print. I thought I was supporting causes against human trafficking and for veterans," Chilli wrote. "Two things I care deeply about as my dad is a veteran and everyone knows I love children. I have learned a valuable lesson and ask for grace as I navigate this."

Apology Regarding Michelle Obama and Past Political Support

Accompanying her post was a video message in which Chilli expressed her "utmost respect and admiration" for Michelle Obama. She emphasized that she would never intentionally disrespect the former First Lady or any woman, clarifying that the Instagram reshare was accidental. To reinforce her political history, Chilli noted that she contributed to both of Barack Obama's presidential campaigns and voted for him twice.

Historical Context and Previous Controversies

This is not the first time Chilli has faced public scrutiny over her statements. In 2017, she received backlash on social media for using the phrase "all lives matter," which was popularized as a counter to the Black Lives Matter movement's focus on police brutality and racial injustice. She later clarified that her intention was to be inclusive and not to diminish the importance of the BLM movement or suggest that violence against Black individuals was acceptable.

Chilli continues to be an active performer, as seen during her appearance at the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration in December 2024. Her recent statements aim to reconcile her public image with her personal beliefs, highlighting the complexities celebrities face in the political arena.
