Stephen Colbert Mocks Trump's Easter Social Media Rant About Iran War
Late Show host Stephen Colbert delivered a scathing monologue on Monday, targeting President Donald Trump over his Easter Sunday social media outburst. The controversial post featured profanity, a traditional Muslim greeting, and threats toward Iran amid an escalating war that Trump initiated.
Colbert's Opening Monologue Takes Aim
"I hope you all had a great weekend, whether you celebrated Passover or Easter or, like our president, went completely cage-free crazy on the internet," Colbert began. "Because on Easter morning he posted his latest plans for the war in Iran."
Colbert proceeded to read Trump's staggering post in a mocking, exaggerated voice: "Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin' Strait, you crazy bastards, or you'll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH!"
Background of the Iran Conflict
Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz last month after Trump launched the war. This strategic waterway handles approximately one-fifth of the world's oil supply. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least thirteen U.S. service members and over two thousand Iranians. Experts warn it could trigger a global energy crisis.
Historical Comparison and Network Censorship
Colbert noted that it's "not often that a network has to bleep the words of a sitting president." He humorously referenced the last instance occurring during former President Harry Truman's administration. "Truman put that famous sign on his desk, 'The shit stops fuck,'" Colbert joked, twisting Truman's actual Resolute Desk reminder that read, "The Buck Stops Here."
Mocking Shifting Deadlines
The Late Show host continued mocking Trump's ever-changing deadlines for Iran to reopen the strait to ships. Colbert pointed out that Trump vowed in mid-March to "obliterate" Iranian power plants if the strait wasn't opened within forty-eight hours. However, those strikes were postponed multiple times.
"At this point he's tried every tactic except passive-aggressive parental guilt trip," Colbert joked. He then imitated Trump: "'Well, I guess you won't open the Strait of Hormuz before I die, but that's fine. I mean, who needs oil when I'm clearly never going to have grandchildren?'"
Escalating Dire Situation
The war has grown increasingly severe. Trump wrote on social media Tuesday morning about his latest deadline, stating, "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again." He has repeatedly emphasized that no measures are off the table in this conflict.
